Heart disease, ADHD, and mental health: when it comes to medicine, men and women often require different approaches. Yet, modern medicine is still largely based on the male body. For women, the risk of dying after a heart attack is twice as high as for men. Furthermore, ADHD in girls is often unrecognized and remains untreated. Conversely, for men, mental health issues remain a taboo: the suicide rate is nearly three times higher than that of women. Nevertheless, the 'standard patient' in medical training, drug development, and daily healthcare is still considered to be male. In Frankfurt, doctors are seeking to change that. They founded Germany's first university Women's Heart Center. Research and training on cardiovascular diseases there focus specifically on women. Additionally, they offer personalized treatments and preventive screenings that cater to their needs. Meanwhile, ADHD remains unnoticed and untreated in many girls. Author and influencer Angelina Boerger knows all about this, having received her diagnosis only at age 29. Today, more than 150,000 people follow her Instagram channel, where she speaks candidly about her daily life with ADHD. Through social media, a book, and a theatrical performance, she brings ADHD in girls and women to the attention of a wide audience. Although healthcare is primarily tailored to men, men often get in their own way when it comes to their health. They utilize preventive health screenings less frequently than women and are slower to see a doctor, even when they have symptoms. Mental health, in particular, remains a sensitive topic for many men. In Ireland, two initiatives are working to change this. The suicide prevention program 'CAIRDE' organizes workshops on mental health for construction workers. The 'On Fair Ground 2' project encourages people to help farmers take their health seriously and seek timely medical assistance. In 2008, Ireland became the first country in the world to implement a national men's health strategy.
