Wanneer enkele jaren geleden mensen over de hele wereld zichzelf van het leven beginnen te beroven met een weinig bekende stof, hebben politiediensten aanvankelijk geen idee dat er een verband tussen veel van deze sterfgevallen bestaat. Het zijn rouwende nabestaanden en onderzoeksjournalisten die stukje bij beetje ontdekken wat er werkelijk aan de hand is. Hun zoektocht leidt eerst naar een online forum over zelfdoding en vervolgens naar een verkoper in Canada: Kenneth Law. 200 zendingen naar 41 landen en wordt hij mogelijk in verband gebracht met meer dan 145 sterfgevallen wereldwijd. Maar dit verhaal gaat over veel meer dan één persoon. Het gaat over de plekken op het internet waar wanhopige mensen terechtkomen wanneer ze in de echte wereld niet vinden wat ze zoeken.
